Sample Essay Responses and Rater Commentary for the Argument Task. The sample essays that follow were written in response to the prompt that appears below . The rater commentary that follows each sample essay explains how the response meets the criteria for that score. For a more complete understanding of the criteria for each score point, see the Analyze an power, Argument Scoring Guide. In surveys Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating and fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for writing these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of Wind its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. Edexcel Chinese Based! For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the Wind river's water and the river's smell. In response, the state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Use of the river for water sports is therefore sure to increase. The city government should for that reason devote more money in essays in haiti this year's budget to riverside recreational facilities. Write a response in Wind power which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument.
Be sure to explain how the argument depends on the assumptions and what the implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted. Note: All responses are reproduced exactly as written, including errors, misspellings, etc., if any. While it may be true that the Mason City government ought to devote more money to argument riverside recreational facilities, this author's argument does not make a cogent case for increased resources based on power, river use. It is easy to essay understand why city residents would want a cleaner river, but this argument is power, rife with holes and assumptions, and of essay development strategies, thus, not strong enough to lead to increased funding. Citing surveys of city residents, the author reports city resident's love of water sports.
It is not clear, however, the scope and validity of Wind power that survey. Essay! For example, the survey could have asked residents if they prefer using the river for water sports or would like to see a hydroelectric dam built, which may have swayed residents toward river sports. The sample may not have been representative of city residents, asking only those residents who live upon the river. The survey may have been 10 pages long, with 2 questions dedicated to river sports. We just do not know. Unless the survey is fully representative, valid, and reliable, it can not be used to effectively back the author's argument. Additionally, the Wind power author implies that residents do not use the river for swimming, boating, and essays in haiti, fishing, despite their professed interest, because the water is polluted and power, smelly. One Lie Leads Another! While a polluted, smelly river would likely cut down on Wind, river sports, a concrete connection between the resident's lack of river use and the river's current state is not effectively made.
Though there have been complaints, we do not know if there have been numerous complaints from a wide range of people, or perhaps from one or two individuals who made numerous complaints. Essays! To strengthen his/her argument, the power author would benefit from implementing a normed survey asking a wide range of residents why they do not currently use the river. Building upon the implication that residents do not use the river due to the quality of the river's water and the smell, the author suggests that a river clean up will result in increased river usage. If the river's water quality and smell result from problems which can be cleaned, this may be true. For example, if the decreased water quality and aroma is caused by pollution by factories along the river, this conceivably could be remedied.
But if the quality and from paragraph, aroma results from the power natural mineral deposits in the water or surrounding rock, this may not be true. References Academic Essay! There are some bodies of water which emit a strong smell of sulphur due to the geography of the area. This is not something likely to be afffected by a clean-up. Consequently, a river clean up may have no impact upon power, river usage. Regardless of whether the from paragraph river's quality is able to be improved or not, the Wind author does not effectively show a connection between water quality and river usage. A clean, beautiful, safe river often adds to a city's property values, leads to increased tourism and revenue from those who come to take advantage of the river, and a better overall quality of life for residents. For these reasons, city government may decide to essay one lie leads invest in improving riverside recreational facilities. Wind Power! However, this author's argument is essays in haiti, not likely significantly persuade the city goverment to allocate increased funding.
Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 6. This insightful response identifies important assumptions and Wind, thoroughly examines their implications. The essay shows that the proposal to spend more on riverside recreational facilities rests on three questionable assumptions, namely: that the survey provides a reliable basis for budget planning that the river’s pollution and odor are the only reasons for its limited recreational use that efforts to clean the water and remove the chinese a2 research odor will be successful. By showing that each assumption is power, highly suspect, this essay demonstrates the weakness of the entire argument. For example, paragraph 2 points out that the essay survey might not have used a representative sample, might have offered limited choices, and Wind, might have contained very few questions on water sports.
Paragraph 3 examines the tenuous connection between complaints and limited use of the river for recreation. Complaints about water quality and odor may be coming from edexcel chinese a2 research, only a few people and, even if such complaints are numerous, other completely different factors may be much more significant in reducing river usage. Finally, paragraph 4 explains that certain geologic features may prevent effective river clean-up. Details such as these provide compelling support. In addition, careful organization ensures that each new point builds upon the previous ones. For example, note the clear transitions at the beginning of paragraphs 3 and 4, as well as the logical sequence of sentences within paragraphs (specifically paragraph 4). Although this essay does contain minor errors, it still conveys ideas fluently. Note the effective word choices (e.g., rife with . . . assumptions and power, may have swayed residents).
In addition, sentences are not merely varied; they also display skillful embedding of subordinate elements. Since this response offers cogent examination of the argument and conveys meaning skillfully, it earns a score of 6. The author of this proposal to increase the budget for Mason City riverside recreational facilities offers an interesting argument but to move forward on the proposal would definitely require more information and thought. While the references academic correlations stated are logical and probable, there may be hidden factors that prevent the City from diverting resources to this project. For example, consider the survey rankings among Mason City residents. Wind Power! The thought is references academic essay, that such high regard for water sports will translate into usage. But, survey responses can hardly be used as indicators of Wind actual behavior. Many surveys conducted after the winter holidays reveal people who list exercise and weight loss as a top priority.
Yet every profession does not equal a new gym membership. Even the wording of the survey results remain ambiguous and vague. While water sports may be among the residents' favorite activities, this allows for many other favorites. What remains unknown is the edexcel priorities of the general public. Do they favor these water sports above a softball field or soccer field? Are they willing to sacrifice the municipal golf course for power better riverside facilities?
Indeed the academic essay survey hardly provides enough information to discern future use of Wind improved facilities. Closely linked to the surveys is the bold assumption that a cleaner river will result in from paragraph to essay increased usage. While it is not illogical to expect some increase, at power what level will people begin to references use the river? The answer to this question requires a survey to find out the reasons our residents use or do not use the river. Is river water quality the primary limiting factor to usage or the lack of docks and piers? Are people more interested in water sports than the recreational activities that they are already engaged in?
These questions will help the Wind power city government forecast how much river usage will increase and to assign a proportional increase to the budget. Likewise, the author is optimistic regarding the state promise to clean the argument response essay river. We need to hear the power source of the voices and consider any ulterior motives. Is this a campaign year and the plans a campaign promise from the state representative? What is the timeline for the clean-up effort? Will the state fully fund this project?
We can imagine the essay one lie another misuse of Wind funds in renovating the riverside facilities only to watch the new buildings fall into dilapidation while the state drags the chinese based essay river clean-up. Last, the Wind author does not consider where these additional funds will be diverted from. In Haiti! The current budget situation must be assessed to Wind determine if this increase can be afforded. In a sense, the City may not be willing to draw money away from other key projects from road improvements to schools and education. The author naively assumes that the money can simply appear without forethought on where it will come from. Examining all the various angles and factors involved with improving riverside recreational facilities, the argument does not justify increasing the budget. While the proposal does highlight a possibility, more information is required to warrant any action. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 5.
Each paragraph in the body of this perceptive essay identifies and examines an unstated assumption that is crucial to the argument. The major assumptions discussed are: that a survey can accurately predict behavior that cleaning the river will, in academic essay itself, increase recreational usage that state plans to clean the river will actually be realized that Mason City can afford to spend more on riverside recreational facilities. Support within each paragraph is both thoughtful and thorough. For example, paragraph 2 points out vagueness in the wording of the survey: Even if water sports rank among the favorite recreational activities of Mason City residents, other sports may still be much more popular. Thus, if the first assumption proves unwarranted, the Wind power argument to strategies fund riverside facilities rather than soccer fields or golf courses becomes much weaker. Paragraph 4 considers several reasons why river clean-up plans may not be successful (the plans may be nothing more than campaign promises or funding may not be adequate). Wind! Thus, the weakness of the third assumption undermines the argument that river recreation will increase and riverside improvements will be needed at all. Instead of dismissing each assumption in isolation, this response places them in edexcel essay a logical order and considers their connections. Note the appropriate transitions between and within paragraphs, clarifying the links among the assumptions (e.g., Closely linked to the surveys or The answer to this question requires. ). Along with strong development, this response also displays facility with language. Power! Minor errors in punctuation are present, but word choices are apt and sentences suitably varied in references academic essay pattern and length.
The response uses a number of rhetorical questions, but the implied answers are always clear enough to support the points being made. Thus, the response satisfies all requirements for a score of 5, but its development is not thorough or compelling enough for a 6. The problem with the arguement is the power assumption that if the Mason River were cleaned up, that people would use it for water sports and recreation. This is chinese a2 research essay, not necessarily true, as people may rank water sports among their favorite recreational activities, but that does not mean that those same people have the financial ability, time or equipment to pursue those interests. However, even if the Wind writer of the arguement is correct in from paragraph assuming that the Mason River will be used more by the city's residents, the arguement does not say why the recreational facilities need more money. If recreational facilities already exist along the Mason River, why should the city allot more money to fund them? If the power recreational facilities already in existence will be used more in the coming years, then they will be making more money for themselves, eliminating the need for the city government to devote more money to them. According to the arguement, the reason people are not using the Mason River for types development water sports is because of the smell and the quality of water, not because the Wind recreational facilities are unacceptable. If the city government alloted more money to the recreational facilities, then the budget is being cut from some other important city project. Also, if the assumptions proved unwarranted, and more people did not use the essay one lie leads river for recreation, then much money has been wasted, not only the money for Wind power the recreational facilities, but also the money that was used to clean up the from paragraph river to attract more people in the first place. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 4.
This competent response identifies two unstated assumptions: that cleaning up the Wind power Mason River will lead to increased recreational use that existing facilities along the river need more funding. Paragraph 1 offers reasons why the first assumption is questionable (e.g., residents may not have the necessary time or money for water sports). Similarly, paragraphs 2 and 3 explain that riverside recreational facilities may already be adequate and may, in fact, produce additional income if usage increases. Thus, the response is adequately developed and satisfactorily organized to based show how the argument depends on questionable assumptions. However, this essay does not rise to a score of 5 because it fails to consider several other unstated assumptions (e.g., that the survey is reliable or that the efforts to clean the river will be successful). Furthermore, the final paragraph makes some extraneous, unsupported assertions of power its own. Mason City may actually have a budget surplus so that cuts to other projects will not be necessary, and cleaning the river may provide other real benefits even if it is not used more for water sports. This response is generally free of errors in grammar and usage and displays sufficient control of language to support a score of 4. Surveys are created to speak for essays on earthquake in haiti the people; however, surveys do not always speak for the whole community.
A survey completed by Mason City residents concluded that the Wind residents enjoy water sports as a form of recreation. Based Essay! If that is so evident, why has the river not been used? The blame can not be soley be placed on the city park department. Wind! The city park department can only do as much as they observe. On Earthquake In Haiti! The real issue is Wind, not the residents use of the river, but their desire for a more pleasant smell and a more pleasant sight. If the city government cleans the river, it might take years for the smell to go away.
If the edexcel chinese a2 research essay budget is power, changed to accomodate the from paragraph to essay clean up of the Mason River, other problems will arise. The residents will then begin to complain about other issues in their city that will be ignored because of the great emphasis being placed on Mason River. Wind Power! If more money is taken out of the budget to clean the from to essay river an power, assumption can be made. This assumption is that the budget for another part of cit maintenance or building will be tapped into to. Chinese Based! In addition, to the budget being used to clean up Mason River, it will also be allocated in increasing riverside recreational facilites. The government is trying to Wind appease its residents, and on earthquake, one can warrant that the role of the government is to please the people. There are many assumptions being made; however, the Wind government can not make the assumption that people want the river to be cleaned so that they can use it for recreational water activities. The government has to realize the long term effects that their decision will have on the monetary value of argument their budget.
Rater Commentary for Wind Essay Response Score 3. Even though much of this essay is essays on earthquake in haiti, tangential, it offers some relevant examination of the argument’s assumptions. The early sentences mention a questionable assumption (that the survey results are reliable) but do not explain how the Wind power survey might have been flawed. Then the response drifts to irrelevant matters a defense of the city park department, a prediction of budget problems and the problem of pleasing city residents. Some statements even introduce unwarranted assumptions that are not part of the original argument (e.g., The residents will then begin to complain about types development, other issues and This assumption is that the power budget for another part of city maintenance or building will be tapped into). Near the end, the response does correctly note that city government should not assume that residents want to use the river for recreation. Development Strategies! Hence, the Wind proposal to increase funding for riverside recreational facilities may not be justified. In summary, the references essay language in this response is reasonably clear, but its examination of unstated assumptions remains limited and therefore earns a score of 3.
This statement looks like logical, but there are some wrong sentences in it which is not logical. First, this statement mentions raking water sports as their favorite recreational activities at the first sentence. However, it seems to have a ralation between the first sentence and the setence which mentions that increase the quality of the power river's water and the river's smell. This is a wrong cause and result to solve the problem. Second, as a reponse to the complaints from residents, the references state plan to clean up the river.
As a result, the state expects that water sports will increase. When you look at two sentences, the power result is not appropriate for response the cause. Third, the last statement is the conclusion. However, even though residents rank water sports, the city government might devote the budget to power another issue. This statement is also a wrong cause and result. In summary, the statement is response, not logical because there are some errors in it. The supporting setences are not strong enough to support this issue. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 2. Although this essay appears to power be carefully organized, it does not follow the directions for the assigned task.
In his/her vague references to causal fallacies, the writer attempts logical analysis but never refers to argument any unstated assumptions. Furthermore, several errors in grammar and sentence structure interfere with meaning (e.g., This statement looks like logical, but there are some wrong sentences in it which is not logical). Because this response does not follow the directions for the assigned task and contains errors in sentence structure and logical development, it earns a score of 2. The statement assumes that everyone in Mason City enjoys some sort of recreational activity, which may not be necessarily true. The statement also assumes that if the state cleans up the river, the use of the river for water sports will definitely increase. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 1. The brevity of this two-sentence response makes it fundamentally deficient. Sentence 1 states an assumption that is actually not present in the argument, and Wind power, sentence 2 correctly states an assumption but provides no discussion of its implications. Although the response may begin to address the assigned task, it offers no development. As such, it is clearly extremely brief . providing little evidence of an essays, organized response and earns a score of 1.

You can put the sales process to work in Wind power writing your proposal, right down to the sections of the proposal itself. Proposal writing should follow a document-like design format, but that does not mean that you cannot dress up your proposals, so long as you do so tastefully . One of the great things about writing and sharing proposals in a digital format is that you can incorporate mixed media, like video and HTML, in Wind power interesting and engaging ways. While it’s tempting to turn your proposal into a multimedia extravaganza, a little restraint is edexcel chinese based, probably the best recipe for success. If you would like to integrate mixed media into your proposal, keep the following in mind: Media should be supported by text Media elements should be limited to one per section of the proposal If your first page is a letter, don’t use any media. Mixed media can really fix up a drab proposal, but you don’t want to ignore the time-honored usefulness of images. Images are a great way to convey an idea succinctly in a proposal.
Here are some design considerations for Wind power use in business proposals: Support images with captions (ideally, action captions) Choose images that are memorable – humans use visuals to on earthquake in haiti help them remember Favor relevant graphs and flowcharts over Wind power, generic images (as in clip art) If you use a third-party infographic, as we all do these days, be sure to give credit where credit is due – cite your sources If you work in some sort of creative field, use images or video wisely to references academic show off your work (A photo really says more than a thousand words of boring proposal text.) If you work in any type of service, a video testimonial from a satisfied customer is Wind power, a good way to offer your company credibility And if you sell a something — especially a pretty one — feel free to integrate the photos in with your pricing catalog. No matter what type of media you opt to add to your proposal, you want to make sure it both supports and is supported by the message you are trying to convey to your audience and the best way to do that is with thoughtful formatting. Writing format for academic business proposals. We’ve touched on the topic of the sales writing format, itself, in the past, but here are a few detailed ideas to help take your proposal writing to the next level.
Since every aspect of writing the proposal matters, right down to the tone and verbiage used in writing the proposal, you’ll want to make sure you’re using a winning format when you write your next business proposal. KISS is the writer’s code: Keep It Simple, Stupid. A business proposal is Wind power, not place for one lie long-form prose. Concision trumps all when it comes to writing business proposals. For me, the “bible” of Wind, writing in a sales-friendly format has always been Claude C. Hopkins’ Scientific Advertising , though there are many other great resources out there that tell much the same story. In short, as any great copy writer would tell you, writings intended to sell – or in our world, to get a deal signed – should be free from superfluous language and should speak directly to edexcel based essay the actions you would like the customer to Wind power take.
The best format for your proposal, as Hopkins and others will tell you, is a simple one which is able to be understood by as many readers as possible. Here are some of the compositional formatting elements that work in business proposal writing: Use simple sentences as much as possible (Trust us, the long, run-ons don’t make you sound as clever as you think!) Use clear language, avoiding allusions and figures of edexcel chinese based, speech Use short paragraphs, usually no more than three sentences. In addition to power working well for sales, concise writing has the additional benefit of being easier on paragraph, the reader’s eyes, which is always a plus, as it guarantees they will keep on reading. One of the many great takeaways from Scientific Advertising is the need to reduce word count by eliminating ineffectual adjectives from your writing. Wind! One of my favorite passages in Hopkins’ book comes at the start of chapter seven, “Be Specific”: “Platitudes and generalities roll off the human understanding like water from chinese a2 research based, a duck.
They leave no impression whatever. Wind Power! To say, ‘Best in references academic essay the world,’ ‘Lowest price in Wind power existence,’ etc. are at best simply claiming the essay, expected. But superlatives of Wind power, that sort are usually damaging. They suggest looseness of expression, a tendency to exaggerate, a careless truth. They lead readers to on earthquake in haiti discount all the statements that you make.” The biggest problem with the use of platitudes in the context of a sales writing format, as Hopkins alludes to above, is that they compromise the element of Wind, trust needed in business relationships.
When a reader reaches a platitude, he or she begins to doubt what is being read, and that can spell disaster in a business proposal. You have to essay leads work hard to power gain and retain trust in your proposal writing, don’t let platitudes destroy the trust you’ve worked so hard to references earn. Choose the right (grammatical) person. One of the first choices you have to make when it comes to writing a business proposal is that of grammatical person. Sorry to take you back to Wind composition class, but proposal writers should be aware that the concept of grammatical person is described as “the relationship between the speaker and other participants.” The rules of academic, grammatical person help you to be able to Wind power choose the appropriate personal pronoun in a given sentence. As you can imagine, grammatical person is very important in response essay writing a business proposal. Grammatical person has an effect on the overall tone of a piece of writing. The use of first and second grammatical person throughout a piece of writing sets a conversational tone, which may very well be appropriate in Wind power some situations. Writing Paragraph! Likewise, use of the third person tends to impart a formal tone for Wind the reader (the use of third person is often even called “formal style” as a result). An objective, or third person, writing style is appropriate in many business settings.
So how do you decide what format is response, appropriate to use in writing your proposal? That depends loosely on Wind, a few factors, including the types of essay, type of business you are conducting and who your recipient is. Here are a few pointers. Reasons to use the first/second-person format: Your business is just one person (such as a freelancer), not a team of people Your recipient is a single-person business If a conversational tone fits your business’ overall strategy/culture/ethos If your services offered are person-to-person (such as care giving, physical therapy, etc.) You have an established relationship with your recipient, even if an organization. Reasons to use third-person format: If the recipient is a government organization If the Wind power, recipient is a corporation, non-profit, or other large organization If you operate in one of the many business-to-business fields where formality is generally expected If you do not have an established relationship with the recipient (even if it is writing from paragraph to essay, just one person)
You may also find a reason to switch between grammatical persons within your proposal writing. For example, if you choose to include a cover letter or personal statement as the introductory page, you might use first/second person throughout that page, but switch to the third person objective style for the remaining pages in the proposal. As a caveat to choosing the power, right grammatical person overall, note that the rules for personal pronouns also help readers understand when a person is being referred to versus when a business entity is essays, being referenced. Wind! Many business proposal writers make rampant mistakes when referring to essays organizations. For example, “Microsoft” is Wind power, always gender neutral ( it/its ), whereas “Bill Gates” always adopts the one lie, masculine personal pronouns ( he, his, him ) and can function in pluralities of people ( we/us/our/they/them/theirs ). Power! Any person can potentially constitute the addressee of the second person ( you/yours ). This is a detail that will greatly improve the overall readability of essay, your proposal. Keep your eyes ( and theirs ) on the prize. Okay, grammar lesson over, back to business. You may be tempted to throw everything and Wind power the kitchen sink into your proposal writing efforts, but the best advice is to keep the readers focused on on earthquake in haiti, the ultimate prize of winning the bid . Your proposal is one lie leads, meant to cause an “actionable outcome” (as is popular to say these days), so it should follow a format that is Wind power, shaped around resulting in a buying action. Writing Paragraph To Essay! If your proposal assumes a format that keeps your offer clear, its benefit to the prospect, and makes it easy to be awarded, you’ve done your job. anaylsis essay You’ve been staring at Wind your blank computer screen for what feels like hours, trying to figure out essay leads another, how to start your analytical essay. You try to choose between writing the Wind introduction first or getting right into the meat of argument essay, it. Power. But somehow, it seems too difficult to essays on earthquake in haiti, do either. Power. What you need is is a blueprint—a foolproof way to get your essay structured. Then all you have to do is fill in the blanks.
By Anonymous [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons. Types Of Essay. What an Analytical Essay Is—And What It Isn’t. Helpful, right? Um, not so much. First, it might be more useful to explain what an power, analytical essay isn’t before getting to what it is . An analytical essay isn’t a summary. Though this may seem obvious in theory, it’s more difficult in on earthquake, practice.
If you read your essay and it sounds a lot like a book report, it’s probably only summarizing events or characters. One way to figure out if you’re summarizing instead of analyzing is to look at your support. Are you simply stating what happened, or are you relating it back to your main point? Okay, so what is an analytical essay, exactly ? Usually, it’s writing that has a more narrowed focus than a summary. Analytical essays usually concentrate on how the book or poem was written—for example, how certain themes present themselves in Wind, the story, or how the use of metaphor brings a certain meaning to a poem.
In short, this type of argument response essay, essay requires you to look at the smaller parts of the work to help shed light on the larger picture. An example of a prompt—and the example I’m going to power, use for the rest of this post—could be something like: Analyze the from paragraph theme of sacrifice in the Harry Potter series. Power. (Note: there might be some spoilers, but I figured everyone who was planning on references essay, reading the books has done so already—or at least has seen the movies.) One Way To Form Your Analytical Essay Outline. There are quite a few ways to Wind, organize your analytical essay, but no matter how you choose to argument response essay, write it, your essay should always have three main parts: I’ll get into the nitty-gritty of this soon, but for all you visual learners, here is a nice representation of all the components that make a great analytical essay outline. You can see that I’ve added a few more details than just the introduction, body, and conclusion. Wind. But hold your horses—we’re getting to those parts right now. Introduction of based essay, Your Analytical Essay Outline. The purpose of power, your introduction is to get the references academic reader interested in your analysis. The introduction should include at least three things—a hook, your thesis statement, and a sentence or two describing how you intend to prove your thesis statement. 1. You gotta hook ‘em from the start. The first part of your introduction should draw the reader in. Power. This is called the hook.
The hook should be interesting or surprising. You can achieve this by asking a rhetorical question, giving some relevant statistics, or making a statement that’s unusual or controversial. For my Harry Potter example, I might say, “Since the publication of the first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , some Christian groups have attacked the strategies books for promoting witchcraft. However, one of the main themes of the books draws inspiration from Christianity itself—that of sacrifice.” Okay, so that’s two sentences. But it’s got a little bit of controversy and relates to Wind, what the rest of the essay will discuss. 2. Get to the good stuff—write a killer thesis statement. Okay, so now that you’ve got your reader hooked, you need to start getting to the point. This is where the to essay thesis statement comes in. My thesis might be, “The theme of sacrifice is prevalent throughout the series and is embodied as sacrifice for the greater good, sacrifice for an ultimate gain, and sacrifice to keep a promise.” 3. It’s time to Wind power, back up your thesis. Let the argument essay reader know how you’re going to prove your claim.
For my example, I would let the reader know that I intend to analyze the instances of Harry’s “death,” Voldemort’s sacrifice of his soul in exchange for immortality, and Wind power how Snape sacrifices in types of essay development, order to Wind power, honor a promise made to essay one lie, Lily Potter. These points will be the building blocks of the body paragraphs. Body of Your Analytical Essay Outline. The body is where you can start to get really creative and play around with formatting. In the flowchart, there are three body paragraphs. But that’s because I was trained in the 5-paragraph outline. But you can include as many or as few body paragraphs as you want—as long as you end up thoroughly supporting your thesis. For my outline, each body paragraph includes a topic sentence, followed by three sets of claims, evidence to support those claims, and Wind power how that evidence ties back to the topic sentence. Again, three is essays on earthquake in haiti, not necessarily a magic number here. You could make one claim with a lot of Wind power, evidence, or five claims to support your topic sentence. But let’s get into it, shall we?
1. Develop a strong topic sentence. Each topic sentence in each body paragraph of your analytical essay outline should tell the reader exactly what that section is going to essays on earthquake in haiti, be about. My first body paragraph might start with, “Harry Potter is willing to fulfill prophecy and make the ultimate sacrifice—that of his life—in order to save the rest of the wizarding world.” 2. Make your claim. The claim should dive into a smaller part of the Wind overarching topic sentence. The topic sentence I gave can be broken down into paragraph to essay, several smaller claims—that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was actually willing to die, and that his death would be of Wind, profound significance. 3. Provide evidence from the text to back your claim.
You can’t just go around making claims without any support. You can use quotes or paraphrase parts of the text to add evidence. For evidence that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, you could cite the instance in the hall of argument, prophecies with the quote, “and either must die at Wind the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives.” 4. Tie that evidence to the topic sentence. Of Essay Development. You have to make it absolutely clear why you included the evidence. If you don’t, your analytical essay runs the risk of Wind power, being a summary. For example, with the essay citing of the prophecy, I would tell the reader that Harry and his friends found said prophecy and figured out that it had to be about Wind him (although there are objections that it could’ve been referring to Neville, but we’ll leave that out of this example). They knew that either Voldemort had to die or Harry did, and essay he had to be willing to do that. They’re not needed in power, the outline, but when you write your final essay, be sure you include effective transitions. This will help your essay flow.
Conclusion of Your Analytical Essay Outline. References Academic Essay. After you’ve built up all of power, your body paragraphs, given the appropriate evidence to back your claims, and tied that evidence to your awesome topic sentences, you’re ready to wrap it all up. Argument. The conclusion should be a brief restatement of your main points without being a direct copy. For example, “There are many motivations behind sacrifice—to help others, to Wind power, help oneself, or to keep a promise to a loved one—and J.K. Rowling explores several of them through the characters in the Harry Potter book series.” This, of course, does not suffice as a full conclusion. To fill it out and writing give the Wind power reader a sense of closure, you can relate the theme to the real world or end with a final quote from the text or the references essay author.

While applicants are likely to Wind first notice the absence of a goals essay, something that the Booth Insider which introduced the new questions discussed, there is actually somewhere between 300 and 400 words to do so. I don’t know why Booth is trying to not make this look like an writing, essay or address it directly unless it is simply to appear to be like some other top schools that have cut back on essay content. In a subsequent Booth Insider , they wrote:
After reviewing our new essay questions, many of Wind, you have asked how to convey your professional goals and aspirations in the application. While the response essay essays do not specifically address your professional trajectory or goals, there are many opportunities to highlight this within the Wind rest of the application. Start with non-essay goals content above, since whatever you write in the essays should connect with your goals either in terms of demonstrated potential. You need to Wind power effectively segment your content because of the very open-ended nature of the Presentation/Essay. The goals has a clear focus, so it is best to start there. In general, for any application, starting with the goals always makes sense because what you say in essay, it will impact what you say elsewhere. After all you want to Wind show how other aspects of argument essay, who you are will support your goals. Next: This is really up to power you, but I suggest really trying to figure out what specific topics you want to focus in on in the two short essays and in the Presentation/Essay. Essay? In general, I suggest starting with the two short essays, especially if you have content that you intend repurpose from another school. By outlining what you intend to power do in argument response essay, each of these essays, you are less likely to have unnecessary overlapping content between them. Next: Write the Wind power Optional Essay and/or Reapplication Essays if you need to. Keep in mind that unlike most other US schools, Booth has a very open-ended optional essay that can be used for discussing something positive if you have space available to do so. Finally: After you have written everything, make sure it works as part of your entire application strategy.
Review your entire application and think about whether you have presented all aspects of yourself as clearly as possible. Specifically think about your application meets Chicago Booth’s three central evaluation criteria: curriculum, community, and career. Short Answer Essays. 1. My favorite part of my work is…. (250 word max) 2. I started thinking differently when… (250 word max)
Use these essays to help show admissions your ability to be self-aware and to have impact. To Essay? In other words, these questions are partially a test of your self-awareness both as a person and a leader. LEAD (Leadership Effectiveness and power, Development) is the only required course at Booth and one that involves becoming aware of one’s leadership style in an attempt to essay one lie leads eventually improve it. You can conceive of this essay as a pre-LEAD exercise. One great place to Wind power read about leadership, and business in general, is Harvard Business School Working Knowledge. Chinese Based Essay? The last time I checked there were 360 articles on leadership and management posted there. Find out what kind of power, leader you are by taking this quiz based on Lewin’s classic leadership style framework. I think leadership is more complicated than Lewin’s framework, but this quiz is a great way to get you started thinking about yourself, a key part of answering any leadership essay question effectively.Third, if you have not done so, I suggest reading relevant essays in academic essay, 65 Successful Harvard Business School Application Essays: With Analysis by power, the Staff of the Harbus, The Harvard Business School Newspaper. Reading through the essays on leadership should help you to understand the great diversity of topics that are possible.
By the leads way, if you have noticed a lack of Booth-specific resources on leadership in the above, it is because there is actually very few such resources. Power? Booth’s research has not been focused on leadership studies per types development strategies, se, something reflected in the fact that with the power notable exception of the Center for references academic Decision Research, none of Booth’s Research and Learning Centers focus on the study of leadership, nor do its three highly specialized journals. Wind? Be that as it may, at least at the stage of academic essay, admission, Booth cares about Wind power, your self-awareness as a person and a leader. 1. My favorite part of my work is…. (250 word max) This question is great opportunity to show how you have had a positive impact professionally. We will assume your favorite part of work is not leaving your office or collecting your salary! Instead focus on some aspect of what you do which you both enjoy and have been successful at. In other words, I would look at this as primarily an accomplishment essay with the writing to essay limitation that what you accomplished is Wind power, something you actually like.
I would surely not use this discuss simply the routine part of what you do that can be easily gleamed from your resume, but rather something that really sets you apart. Some key things to essays keep in mind when answering this question: -An Accomplishment can reveal your potential to succeed at Chicago and Wind power, afterwords. -An Accomplishment can reveal your potential for contributing to your classmates. -Everyone has had accomplishments, so the more unique the accomplishment, the harder it will be for you to compared to others. Brainstorm possible answers: The first thing you need to do is essay, think of the accomplishments and also what you actually enjoy. These will eventually take the form of stories, so that is what I call them. Here are my criteria for thinking about Wind, whether an accomplishment is a good topic for this essay: Ask yourself what skill, value, or unique experience is being showcased by your accomplishment: Your accomplishment needs to reveal valuable things about you. Some will call these selling points, but more specifically they consist of skills, values, or unique experiences.
One might use a specific accomplishment to based essay emphasize one’s leadership skills, another to show one’s ethical values, and another to explain a significant barrier that was overcome. Power? The point is that the accomplishment must at of essay strategies its core reveal something key to understanding who you are. Ask yourself what potential for success in the MBA program or afterwords is being demonstrated: You may or may not be directly stating this in the essay, but you should think about power, what the accomplishment reveals in terms of response essay, your potential. Booth Adcom will most certainly be considering how your accomplishment demonstrates your potential to Wind succeed in argument response, the MBA program and afterwords, so you should as well. One key way of Wind, thinking about the MBA application process is to see it as a test of potential. Potential itself can mean different things at different schools and writing from paragraph, so you must keep in mind differences between schools and in particular must pay close attention to what schools say really matters when they assess applicants. Please keep in Wind power, mind that a core part of paragraph to essay, your own application strategy should be determining which parts of you to power emphasize both overall and for a particular school. Just as with potential, think about how your favorite part of work demonstrates your ability to add value to edexcel chinese other students at Chicago: It is not likely or necessary that you will be explaining how your accomplishment will be contribution, but rather this is a strategic consideration.
2. I started thinking differently when… (250 word max) 1. Discussion of the thing (person, place, event, book, situation) that changed your thinking. 2. Explanation for Wind power why the thing changed your thinking. 3. One Lie? Perhaps a specific example of how your thinking was changed in terms of actions you took. The Chicago Booth experience will take you deeper into issues, force you to challenge assumptions, and Wind power, broaden your perspective. In a four-slide presentation or an essay one lie another, essay of no more than 600 words, broaden our perspective about who you are. Understanding what we currently know about you from the application, what else would you like us to know? We have set forth the following guidelines: The content is power, completely up to on earthquake in haiti you.
There is no right, or even preferred, approach to this essay. Feel free to use the software with which you are most comfortable. Acceptable formats for upload in the online application system are PowerPoint, Word, or PDF. Power? However, we suggest converting your file to a PDF to one lie leads preserve your intended formatting. There is a strict maximum of four pages (presentation) or 600 words (essay), though you can provide fewer if you choose. All content must fit within four pages (presentation) or 600 words (essay). The file size is limited to power 16 MB.
The document will be viewed electronically, but we cannot support embedded videos, music, hyperlinks, or motion images. Based on essay working with 20 clients admitted to Wind Booth that needed to essays on earthquake prepare slide presentations, I am confident about the Wind power following. Types Of Essay Development? Each of these client’s presentations was distinct and provided admissions with an interesting set of perspectives on Wind the applicant. Some of the slides looked really professional, while others were clearly not. Some were funny, others serious.
Some were high concept, others very simple and writing, direct. Wind Power? All of essay one lie, these slides worked in power, their own way. This year, you might not be doing slides, but my core advice, will still hold. PRESENTATION IN ALMOST ALL CASES! ESSAY ONLY IF IT IS REAL UNIQUE AND WILL NOT BE PERCEIVED AS HAVING BEEN WRITTEN FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL!
